I once managed to bump/slingshot out of a sun (after scanning down an empty ship that was parked there and warping on it). That bump sent me almost 2 AU within 8 minutes, so I guess that was the fastest flight I ever took outside of a warp bubble...

The main use Ive seen them put to, is for destroying wreckage at the end of a lost fight, to deny looting rights to the victorious opponent. That seems to happen quite frequently. Not a nice move, but so is blowing up each others ships.
